REVOLUTIONARY IMPROVEMENTS Previously the main advantages of Printex labeling have been consistency, quality and maintenance control. To this are now added the virtues of speed and crime prevention. Apart from the informational database, authorized users from the targeted categories can access designated portions of an additional tracking database. Every garment style, and even individual garment if desired, has a registered bar code identifier. This identifier tracks the garment’s type, production run, style, color, cut, size, contractors and sub contractor. If desired (as is frequently the case for high-end garments) information on distributor, distribution dates, retailer, sale date and sakes prices (among other things) can be added as well. The crime and abuse reduction implications are momentous. Among other things:
Subject to privacy considerations, CSI units and other investigatory agencies could be aided by garment tracing capabilities. This type of monitoring is akin to that already in place in the transportation and food industries, where public safety issues are paramount. As an example one may remember the sequence of events that led to
the identification of Timothy McVey as the bomber of the Murrah Federal
building in Oklahoma City a few years ago. Working initially from
a manufacturer’s serial number on the axle of the truck carrying
explosives, government agents determined the owner to be a truck rental
company. From there they identified the person renting the truck –
all in a matter of hours.
